As a lead up to the new Candykiller 5th Anniversary print, we thought it would be interesting to show the letterpress process. Here are the various stages in creating the print.
I would like to thank Blush Publishing for doing a beautiful job. The print is now available to order here. (click the images for a larger view)


1 Paper ready to go on the guillotine for trimming down to press sheets. 300gsm Somerset 100% cotton.

2 Paper has been cut to oversize A4 to allow for registration marks and grippers on the press.

3 The paper is loaded onto the press.

4 Checking the prints for impression into the paper, the amount of ink and for any problems with the plates.

5 Checking the prints for even pressure across the print area, and for consistency of the ink as the prints come off the press.

6 Checking the wear on the letterpress plates after running the first colour. Some textured papers can start to damage the plates leaving a mottled surface.
However, on this short run of 100 prints there should be no problems.


7 Mixing the second ink to specified Pantone reference, and fine-tuning the colour to match a previously produced print.

8 The first glimpse of the print on the delivery side of the press. Registration is very critical for this print and after a few tweaks the two colours line up.

9 Giving the prints a little drying time while the press is cleaned and plates are changed for the final pass through the press.

10 Here you can see the paper being sucked up as the grippers take the paper into the press.

11 Making sure the debossed print is registered and lined up perfectly. Looks like it needs to move up a little so it is adjusted before running the final prints.

12 The final pass is a deboss stamp into the paper. Deboss is exactly the same process as the previous two passes but without any ink.
A deboss into this pure cotton paper leaves a beautiful impression.
